Excavation Roof
Heating System

Groundbreaking occurred on March 20, 2005. In addition to many congregants who stood or sat in the rain to witness this historic event, the Mayor of Middletown joined other members of the church in breaking the ground with a commemorative shovel. Both the younger and older generations had an opportunity to jump on the shovel and throw a pile of dirt. In our excitement we almost forgot that the Chairperson of the Building Committee, Dick Winters, did not get a chance to dig dirt. Fortunately, he was remembered in time to have many people witness this exuberant participation.

Excavation began in May. Prior to this, the barn was dismantled and taken down. Memorabilia, including bricks and pieces of barn, were given to people who requested a tangible piece of history. All the topsoil from the building site was stripped off and piled high to be used later on the softball field which will be eventually be built on Griggs' Field.

The foundation began June 1st.

Super Sunday occurred on June 12th. Everyone had the opportunity to offer their contributions towards the building fund and have the collection counted during the service. This was followed by a church picnic under a big tent on the lawn beside the church (aka the former location of Albert Griggs' corn patch). There was an overflow crowd in attendance, and children and teenagers spilled out around the tent onto the lawn, picking shady spots to chat, run around, and munch their delicious dinner. The committee of servers did a fabulous job of serving up yummy food, and in spite of the heat, everyone ate heartily. There was an air of excitement and exhilaration pervading the attendees, causing some to express themselves in dance during the clean-up. Age did not seem to be a barrier to free form expression of joy. Sadly, the digital evidence of celebratory dance was accidentally lost; perhaps providentially to certain persons.

The steelwork was erected and the steelwork began June 24th. On July 27th & 28th, a number of people helped out with laying down the plastic tubing which comprise the building's heating system. The work was checked by very competent in house church engineers. Following this, on July 30th, the concrete was poured over the heating system. Beginning on August 1st, work began on putting sheets of plywood on the roof.
