John & Jeanne Whittemore
Regional Director and Women’s Ministry Coordinator for Christar in East Asia (October, 2010)

Jeanne and I started our missionary career together under Christar in 1970 as teachers at Faith Academy, a school for missionary kids in Manila, Philippines. After 14 years at the school we moved south to the island of Mindanao where we ministered for 7 years as church planters among the Cebuano people along the north coast. In addition to our church planting ministry John also served during that time as the Philippine Field Director for Christar.

Currently we are serving in the capacity of Regional Director and Jeanne as Women’s Ministry Coordinator for Christar’s East Asia fields. Our role is primarily to provide pastoral care and administrative oversight plus training for some 75 missionaries working on 15 church planting teams in the countries of Mongolia, China, Japan, Philippines and Indonesia. Each year we travel extensively throughout the region as together we serve Christar missionaries on each of these five fields. Research and planning is also in progress for opening new fields in East Asia, such as Thailand, as God opens doors and thrusts out more laborers into this part of the harvest.
But it is not just about a geographical focus. Most importantly it is our passion to see the Gospel proclaimed and churches planted among the least reached peoples of East Asia. The term “least reached” is used to describe those peoples who have no access to a viable church where they can worship the one true God in their own heart language and cultural context. Those who still have had no opportunity to hear the Good News have the priority in all of the ministries of Christar, both in this region and around the world.
